Richard (Rick) Chase Dean
October 17, 1944 - July 18, 2017
Rick Dean, 72, co-owner of Moxie Java, died peacefully at home with his family on July 18th, 2017. Rick was born on October 17, 1944. He was the son of Betty Chase and Norman Dean who farmed and raised cattle on the Camas Prairie outside of Grangeville. Rick graduated from Grangeville High School in 1963. The Chase/Dean family built a successful business that Rick took over after his service in the Army and graduation from University of Idaho. He met his love, Stephanie West at the University of Idaho while finishing his degree. They married in 1972 and were blessed with 3 beautiful children, Brandon, Courtney and Erick. Rick’s passion for life’s beauty energized him and he was a wonderful husband and father who shared his love of snow-skiing, boating, and horse-back riding with his wife and children. In addition to his devotion to his family, he had an entrepreneurial and optimistic spirit, starting a number of businesses adjacent to farming and most recently embarking on a second career leading Moxie Java. He was an active supporter of various community charities and a business leader who bravely advocated for small business owners. He was a loving husband and provider, a father his children adored, a devoted brother, and a genuine friend. He will be greatly missed. Rick is survived by his wife Stephanie Dean of Boise; children Brandon Dean of Simi Valley, CA, Courtney Dean Lansing of Burien, WA, and Erick Dean of Piedmont, CA; sister, Joan Parker of Meridian, ID; and eight grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the American Cancer Society.

190th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron
Welcome Home 190th!
Our secret’s out – Moxie Java, along with other Treasure Valley businesses, has been sending ‘care packages’ to Idaho’s own 190th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron (the ‘Skullbangers’) at ‘an undisclosed location in the Middle East.’ ‘Sumo’ and ‘McGoo’ dropped by with a terrific present – a flag kept in the cockpit of an A-10C on four separate combat missions over Syria and Iraq during Operation Inherent Resolve (the military action to quash ISIS in those countries). It’s been an honor to do our small part to support the men and women of the Idaho Air National Guard. Looking forward to meeting up with the entire gang when the USAF Thunderbirds come to Gowen Field in October.

Moxie Java Donates Over $5,000 to The Idaho Foodbank
Moxie Java’ s seventh-anniversary album in its annual Idaho Ho Ho series generated $5760 for The Idaho Foodbank, more than doubling 2015’s donation.
Over the past seven years, over 100 recording artists with Idaho ties have participated in the Idaho Ho Ho recordings, with local musician Steve Fulton serving as producer throughout the series. The album has topped the best-seller list at Boise’s The Record Exchange each of the last seven years.
As in the past, the album served up a uniquely Idahoan take on Christmas music, showcasing established and upcoming local musicians, covering a variety of musical genres, and including both original holiday songs and unique ‘covers’ of holiday favorites. The 2016 album once again celebrated Idaho’s visual arts community, featuring original art by renowned Idaho artist Ward Hooper.
Since 2010, the Idaho Ho Ho program has generated funds which have enabled The Idaho Foodbank to provide the food for the equivalent of over 200,000 meals to Idahoans in need throughout the state. “For seven years, Moxie Java has been synonymous with the holidays and the efforts to solve hunger in our communities,” said Karen Vauk, President and CEO of The Idaho Foodbank.
Ken Stokes, president of Moxie Java, commented “Moxie Java has always been committed to celebrating what is unique in the Idaho experience, and there are few initiatives that are as near and dear to us as a company as our long-time collaboration with Idaho musicians and The Idaho Foodbank. We at Moxie Java once again would like to thank the many musicians, artists, individuals and businesses who generously donated their time and talents to this very worthy cause, and, of course, we offer our sincere gratitude to the residents of Idaho for their continued and enthusiastic support of this program and The Idaho Foodbank.”

Welcome Home to the 124th Idaho Air National Guard from your local Moxie Java
Moxie Java is proud to supply coffee to more than 200 men and women in the Idaho Air National Guard’s 124th Fighter Wing which is was deployed in late spring 2016 to support combat operations in the Middle East.
They represent “the main body of the deployment,” which over the next few months will have sent more than 500 Idaho Air Guard members overseas, spokesman Maj. Chris Borders said. That’s the Idaho Air Guard’s largest deployment since 2008, when Idaho troops went to Afghanistan. Moxie Java also supplied our troops with coffee during the 2008 deployment.
Kiwanis 4th of July Breakfast
For the third year in a row, Moxie Java was delighted to provide coffee to the Gem State Kiwanis Club’s 52nd Annual 4th of July breakfast in Boise’s Julia Davis Park. Over 1000 people got into the patriotic spirit while benefiting many Kiwanis’ charities.
Once again, Moxie Java’s River Runner Blend got cooks fired up in advance of the 15th annual Wing-Off competition in Julius Kleiner Park, with dozens of cooks vying for the title of best chicken wings in the Treasure Valley. Proceeds benefited the Meridian Kiwanis Club.
The hottest thing in coffee these days (especially on those really hot days!) is cold brew. Steeped over time with nary any hot water in sight, cold brew makes for an extremely bold but extremely smooth chilled coffee that got a an extra caffeine kick. Not your mother’s iced coffee, that’s for sure. This stuff might make you give up hot coffee for good (or until fall, anyway).
I love coffee. It’s one of my favorite things in the world, and I love tasting different coffees.
